How to Detect a Water Leak

As a homeowner, there are a couple of ways you can check for a water leak.

• Faucets: check for leaks by placing an empty bowl under the faucet.  Wait for an hour and check the bowl. If there is water inside, then you have a leak.
• Toilets: open the back tank of the toilet and add a few drops of food coloring. Don’t flush the toilet for at least 30 minutes, if the food coloring has moved to the toilet bowl, then you have a leak.
• Underground:
  • Visual inspection: look for wet spots around your property. It could be a moist spot that never dries or an unexplained steady stream of water. These are telltale signs of a water leak.
  • Meter Reading: find your water meter and write down the meter reading. Don’t use any water for a few hours and then read the meter again. If the number has changed, you have a leak.
